Factors affecting the pressure drop of plate heat exchangers

During the operation of plate heat exchangers, pressure drop parameters must be closely monitored. When the medium pressure drop abnormally increases, it will directly lead to insufficient pressure in downstream processes, often requiring additional booster pumps to maintain system operation. Conversely, if the pressure drop is too low, it indicates that the configured heat transfer area exceeds actual requirements, resulting in wasted equipment investment.

From the perspective of equipment structural principles, the pressure drop characteristics of heat exchangers mainly depend on their structural design parameters. Taking the number of plates as an example: under the premise of constant medium flow rate, increasing the number of plates means increasing the number of fluid channels, which directly reduces the flow velocity of the medium in the channels, thereby reducing flow resistance loss. Therefore, scientific calculation of pressure drop is not only key to ensuring stable system operation but also an important basis for achieving economical equipment configuration.
